What is Professional Tax?
Professional Tax (PT) is a state-level tax imposed by State Governments on income earned through profession, employment, trade, or calling. Unlike Income Tax (Central), each state has its own PT Act with different rates.
Maximum PT per Article 276 of the Constitution: ₹2,500 per year per person.
Note: Some states don't levy PT — like Delhi, Haryana, UP, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan (mostly).

Maharashtra: Slab-based, max ₹2,500/year — typically ₹200/month for salary above ₹10,000
Karnataka: ₹200/month for salary above ₹15,000 (max ₹2,400/year)

Who pays PT — Two categories
1. Employer responsibility (for employees):
- Employer DEDUCTS PT from employee salary monthly
- Employer deposits to State Government monthly/quarterly
- Employer files return monthly/quarterly/annually depending on state
2. Self-employed (for individuals):
- Professionals (CA, doctor, lawyer, consultant) pay PT directly
- Traders, contractors pay directly
- Usually annual or quarterly self-payment
Registration process
For employers, two-step:
- Employer Registration (PTRC) — Profession Tax Registration Certificate. Required for the establishment.
