What is Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration (previously Udyog Aadhaar) is the simplified online registration for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India. Launched by the Ministry of MSME in July 2020, it is completely free and based on self-declaration linked to PAN and Aadhaar.
Registration is one-time and lifetime valid — no renewal needed (just annual update via portal). It unlocks government schemes, priority lending, GeM eligibility, and MSME delayed payment protection.
Classification — Micro, Small, Medium (2026)
Classification is based on both investment in plant & machinery AND annual turnover. The higher classification applies if either exceeds the threshold.
| Category | Investment in P&M | Annual Turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ≤ ₹2.5 crore | ≤ ₹10 crore |
| Small | ≤ ₹25 crore | ≤ ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ≤ ₹125 crore | ≤ ₹500 crore |
'Investment in P&M' excludes land, building and pre-operative expenses. Services have separate (simpler) classification — purely turnover-based for service Micro/Small/Medium.
Who can register?
Any business that meets the investment/turnover criteria can register:
- Sole proprietorships
- Partnership firms
- LLPs
- Private Limited Companies
- One Person Companies (OPC)
- Cooperatives
- Self-help groups
- Section 8 Companies
Both manufacturing and service enterprises are eligible. One Udyam per PAN (multiple activities are mentioned under same registration).
Step-by-step process (15 minutes, free)
Go to udyamregistration.gov.in (official portal — avoid look-alike sites charging fees).
Step 1: Aadhaar Verification — Enter Aadhaar number of the entrepreneur (proprietor / managing partner / authorised director). OTP sent to mobile linked to Aadhaar.
Step 2: PAN integration — Enter PAN of business. The system auto-fetches your ITR and GST data to calculate turnover. For new businesses without ITR, self-declare.
Step 3: Business details — Enter business name, type, location, NIC code (industry), bank details, employment, GSTIN (if any), social category, gender.
Step 4: Auto-classification — System computes Micro/Small/Medium based on investment + turnover.
Step 5: Certificate issued — Udyam Registration Certificate with 16-character Udyam Registration Number (URN) is issued instantly. Download & print.
Benefits of Udyam Registration
The benefits unlock significant value:
- MSME Delayed Payment Protection (Section 16 of MSMED Act) — Buyers must pay MSMEs within 45 days (or agreed period, max 45 days). Late payments attract interest at 3x bank rate. Claim before MSME Samadhan portal.
- Priority Sector Lending — Banks must lend a defined % to MSMEs. Easier loan approval with concessional rates.
- CGTMSE collateral-free loans — Up to ₹2 crore loan without collateral via Credit Guarantee Trust.
- GeM (Government e-Marketplace) seller registration — Sell to government departments. ₹4+ trillion annual procurement market.
- Tender exemption — Many tenders have EMD/security exemption for MSMEs.
- Concession in trademark/patent filing fees — ₹4,500 vs ₹9,000 for companies.
- Subsidy schemes — CLCSS (capital subsidy), PMEGP, MUDRA, Stand-Up India.
- Tax exemptions — Some startup tax benefits, 80-IAC eligibility.
- Lower stamp duty in some states.
Annual update — Don't miss
While Udyam itself is one-time, the portal requires annual update:
- By 31 March every year — Update turnover (auto-fetched from ITR/GST) and investment
- Update employment numbers if changed
- If your classification changes due to growth (Micro → Small → Medium), the system updates automatically
- Failure to update doesn't deregister you, but data may become stale affecting bank loan eligibility
